Kent Police Constable acquitted of misconduct in a public office

Following a week-long trial at Southwark Crown Court, a constable at Kent Police has been acquitted by a unanimous jury of misconduct in a public office.

The prosecution alleged that the officer had committed the offence by exchanging flirtatious text messages and phone calls with a witness in a live investigation. It was argued by the defence that he had not wilfully misconducted himself as there was a lack of clear training and guidance at the time. In addition, that the behaviour was not of sufficient gravity to amount to a criminal offence.

Ryan Dowding acted for the officer throughout the proceedings.
