Prince Harry renews application for permission to bring claim in judicial review

The Duke of Sussex has renewed his application for permission to judicially review the decision of the “Executive Committee for Protection of Royalty and Public figures” (commonly referred to as RAVEC). The claim concerns whether it is permissible for an individual to pay for protective security by way of a Special Police Service under the Police Act 1996. The Home Office and the Metropolitan Police Service have both contended that there would be clear public policy disadvantages to this and that there was legal uncertainty as to whether this could lawfully be provided by way of a special police service.

The case was heard by Mr Justice Chamberlain who has reserved judgment.

Matthew Butt KC appeared on behalf of the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis.
