Court of Appeal quashes 10 month prison sentence for trainee police officer

On 27^thApril 2023, the Court of Appeal (Stuart-Smith LJ, May J and the Recorder of Southwark) quashed a sentence of 42 weeks’ immediate imprisonment imposed on a trainee police officer following his guilty plea, at Portsmouth Crown Court, to possession of an extreme pornographic image. The Court substituted it with a sentence of 9 weeks’ imprisonment suspended for 12 months.  

The Court also provided general guidance in relation to the sentencing of offenders for possession of extreme pornographic images.
