Court of Appeal Reinstates Orders Screening Police Officers At Inquest

The Court of Appeal allowed an appeal by the Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police, and the Police Federation, against the decision of the Administrative Court, and has reinstated a coroner’s decision to screen police officers from family members of the deceased at a pending inquest. The judgment provides important guidance as to the balance between the requirements of open justice and witness protection.

Hugh Davies QC represented the Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police.

Helen Malcolm QC represented the Police Federation.
