Rwanda extradition hearing begins

The extradition hearing is underway in respect of five defendants who are accused of participating in the Rwandan Genocide in 1994. This is the second extradition request; the first was discharged by the High Court in 2009 on the grounds that there was a real risk that the defendants would suffer an unfair trial in Rwanda.

The hearing is expected to last approximately 8 weeks.

James Lewis QC and Ben Brandon represent the Government of Rwanda.

Helen Malcolm QC and Rachel Kapila represent two of the defendants.
